Hello all,
I'm in the process of installing A.B.S. from a 96 integra into my EG and was considering doing an AWD set up in the future. I currently have a K20Z. I was thinking of utilizing the K24 transmission from the element, but I have a few questions if anyone can help. I already have a way to integrate the hubs to the rear suspension. Is the AWD engagement mechanical or electrical? Does the K24 trans bolt to the K20 engine? I'd like to keep the 6 speed transmission and possibly just utilize the K24 clutch housing and/or AWD system. Any constructive thoughts? Thanks for your help in advance.

Not sure about the AWD engagement but I would bet it is electrical. I do know that any K24 transmission will bolt to any K20 block so no problems there.
If you do this make sure and post it up. Lots of people have talked about it, but nobody that I am aware of has actually done it yet.

The part # for the transmission case is the same from the RSX to the Element (21200-PZF-010), but the clutch case is different. I'm sure it's different because it's supporting the rear drive shaft. I've been told on another forum that the engagement is mechanical, hence AWD, but I'm not sure of any necessary sensors, etc. that might cause problems. I've built a 92 EG hatch that was running with a D16Z6, but that has long been abandoned. I'm going to build my own Atom wanna be eventually, perhaps the SL-R, Sonic 7, or Rocket. Who says you need the use the focus drivetrain for the rocket or 7.

Hmm- I've heard lots of people contemplate the AWD Civic, and VERY few (one, that I know of) actually did it. It takes a TON of fabrication, custom driveshafts and axles and rear suspension, and a big ass budget for time and $. Best of luck, but know going in you'd better not be in a hurry, and you'd better have a dang good fab shop nearby.
Also, I'd plan on custom (not aftermarket- CUSTOM) springs and shocks for the rear, as nobody makes off-the-shelf parts for the EG with axles in the back. Stiffening the rear of the car (braces, roll bar, etc.) would also be a very good idea- Mark W.

Certainly this would not be a weekend project. I worked on my mid-engine rwd civic for years and it's still not done. Yes, tons of fab work to be done. I did speak with a friend of mine who did an AWD civic with a B series, but I'm looking to move into the K territory since I have on installed already, then perhaps utilizing a wrecked Element and salvage everything I might need. I did make a rear hub assembly with an 88 civic wagon trailing arm, 2000 CRV rear hub/bearing and the rest eg lateral links, etc., but the 88 wagon arm was just a little different, but I'm sure I could fab a trailing arm. My other concern is that the Elements and CRVs weren't meant to handle lots of power to the rear, so I'm not sure what the capability is.

Alright- glad to hear you're not some kid trying to shoehorn crap in that won't fit, but someone who understands pain and patience :) Best of luck, and fire away with any questions. You'll be on your own for a lot of stuff, but in terms of the engine, I can help a fair ways- cheers! Mark W.

Thanks a bunch Mark.....no, I'm a 35 year old man driving a modded civic.
Besides this project I'm thinking of doing a K20 conversion on a Sonic 7, Rocket, SL-R (something like that) and/or an electric conversion. I was even contemplating the use of a diesel generator to make the range of the vehicle infinite. Hmmm......all these thoughts in my tiny little head and limited resources. I'm sure a tube frame chassis build would get the looks similar to the electrolite (Atom via electric) but I'd like to build one for a 'reasonable cost'. The Atom is out of control at $60,000 plus. The SL-R is $17,000 and the Rocket or Sonic 7 are very affordable at $7,000 (less motor and drive train, etc.). Building an AWD civic won't get the looks, I'm just tired of breaking the front wheels loose in my basically stock K20. I'm utilizing a 4.8 final with 205/50/15 tire with 200 tread wear. If I mash the pedal in first I sit and spin even with the Type R LSD I've installed. Perhaps I should forget the whole idea and get a Sonic 7, put one electric motor in the front and one in the rear. Now I'd have the AWD I wanted and it would be quick (I hope). If this guy can do, why not me......http://fuel-efficient-vehicles.org/energy-news/?p=353. Thanks for the support in what ever task I take on.....for now I'll just get the ABS up and running.

OK I ordered a 3200 stall vig. converter, it should be here in 2 weeks.
My question is for anyone that has pulled the transmission out of a AWD, How hard is it. I will have a 4 post lift by then.
Thanks for any help/tips.
